Why a Contact Lens Exam Is Important

Contact lens exams go beyond a standard eye exam. Your optometrist will:

  • Measure your cornea and tear film
  • Evaluate pupil and iris size
  • Assess contact lens fit and comfort
  • Review your lifestyle and vision preferences

Everyone’s eyes and vision are different, so a contact lens exam and fitting are essential to prioritize your comfort and visual health.

The Contact Lens Fitting Process

Your contact lens fitting begins with a thorough evaluation of your cornea using a biomicroscope. This magnified view allows your optometrist to check the health of your eyes and ensure contact lenses can be worn safely and comfortably.

Once approved, you will be fitted with trial lenses to see how your eyes adjust and to confirm comfort and proper fit. Follow-up appointments are scheduled as needed to monitor how your eyes respond to the lenses.

Your final contact lens prescription will include specific details that differ from your glasses prescription, including:

  • Lens diameter
  • Brand of contact lenses
  • Curvature of the optical zone
  • Expiration date for replacement lenses

Types of Contact Lenses

Contact lenses are generally divided into 2 main categories: soft lenses and rigid gas-permeable (RGP) lenses.

  • Soft Lenses: Made of flexible plastics that allow oxygen to reach the cornea. They are comfortable and easy to adjust, with newer silicone-hydrogel materials providing even more oxygen to the eyes.
  • RGP Lenses: Durable, resistant to deposits, and longer-lasting than soft lenses. They may take a few weeks to fully adjust but can provide sharper vision in certain conditions.

Both types include specialized lenses to address issues such as dry eye disease and keratoconus.

Hybrid contact lenses have a rigid gas permeable center and are surrounded by a soft outer ring. These lenses focus on correcting nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and presbyopia.

Hybrid contact lenses also address keratoconus, which is an irregular corneal curvature. These lenses can sometimes be more comfortable to wear than traditional RGP lenses.

Scleral contact lenses are larger than standard RGP contacts. They are an excellent option for patients dealing with conditions such as keratoconus and dry eye disease. Scleral lenses rest on the sclera, the white of your eyes, and allow for space on your cornea’s surface to promote extra breathability for your eyes.

The space between the cornea and the back of a scleral lens allows for more fluid to be stored. This space makes it more comfortable for patients with dry eyes who may not usually be able to wear contact lenses.

Multifocal contact lenses utilize a bifocal design with 2 distinct lens powers for near and distant vision. Multifocal lenses are an excellent option for patients with presbyopia and can eliminate the need for reading glasses.

These lenses are available in both soft and RGP contact lens options and are designed for daily wear or extended overnight wear.
