Different Types of Eye Emergencies
“Eye emergencies” is a loose term for anything that can damage your eyes and vision. Understanding the different ways that eye emergencies can occur can help you understand how to handle them in the moment before you’re able to visit us for treatment.
Chemical eye injuries can occur at any moment, even while cleaning around the house. Chemicals from cleaning products, garden chemicals, and industrial chemicals can harm your eyes through accidental cross-contamination.
It’s essential to use caution when handling alkaline products such as drain cleaners, sodium hydroxide, and lye, as they can cause severe damage to your cornea.
If you do accidentally get chemicals in your eyes, the following steps are recommended:
- Thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water.
- Turn your head so the affected eye is down and to the side.
- Hold the affected eyelid open and flush with clean tap water for 15 minutes.
If you experience a chemical splash, please visit us right away. If it’s outside of office hours, go to your nearest emergency room.
Small foreign objects, like sand and dust, can get in your eye and cause irritation. When this occurs, there are some steps you can follow:
- Do not rub your eye, and try blinking to see if it clears your eye.
- Make sure to wash your hands before touching your eye and looking for the object—you may need help with this.
- Use artificial tear drops to help rinse out the foreign object.
- Contact our office if the object is stuck and you cannot remove it.
Large foreign objects like glass or metal that enter your eyes can severely affect your eyes and your vision. If a large foreign object is stuck in your eye, this is a medical emergency, and you should seek treatment at an emergency room as soon as possible.
It is essential not to touch the object, apply pressure, or attempt to remove it.
Conjunctivitis, also known as pink eye, is an inflammation or infection of the transparent membrane that lines your eyelid and covers the white area of your eyeball. Conjunctivitis is usually caused by a bacterial or viral infection or an allergic reaction.
Common signs and symptoms of conjunctivitis can include:
- Redness in the affected eye
- Itchiness in the affected eye
- Tearing in the affected eye
While conjunctivitis can be irritating, it rarely affects your vision in a severe way. However, conjunctivitis can be contagious and is spread through direct and indirect contact, so it’s advisable to seek treatment as soon as possible.
Your eye doctor may prescribe antibiotics, eye drops, or ointment for conjunctivitis treatment.

I cannot say enough about how kind and helpful the staff is. The office and exam rooms are clean, comfortable and updated. Dr. Frank Celin was professional, personable and knowledgeable about my eye conditions nystagmus and strabismus. He took his time and treated me with care. Everyone is so nice in their offices. The other day I kept the office person on the phone for the longest time trying to find the best appt time. She never even flinched! I felt so bad wasting her time but she made me feel so comfortable. Exceptional selection of glasses, and seriously sincere staff and physicians. I would recommend them to anyone. I chose this office after a bad experience with a local competing office and I am quite please with my choice!

They have 3 local offices was extensive hours. They can even accommodate patients on evenings and weekends! I saw Dr. Robert McCauley. I found him to be very pleasant and knowledgeable. The waiting room is very clean and brightly lit. As I went in the evening it was nice and quiet. It almost doesn’t matter though. Both times that I went I was taken promptly and even a little early! I only went for my contacts so I don’t have any comments regarding their frames department, but I will be sure to come back once I need new glasses.
