The Impact of Myopia and Myopia Control

As your child grows and develops, so do their eyes. Their vision is essential to how they learn and develop, and the prevalence of myopia can affect their success both in and outside of the classroom.

Myopia affects nearly 30% of Americans, and that number is projected to increase by the year 2050. Because of its growing concern, we’re passionate about providing personalized control solutions for our patients. Regularly scheduled eye exams for your little one are an important step in lowering the risk of vision complications in the future. Book your child’s next eye exam today.

What Is Myopia?

Myopia, also called nearsightedness, means your child can see close-up objects clearly, but distant objects appear blurry. It happens when the eye grows too long or the cornea is too curved, causing light to focus in front of the retina instead of directly on it.

Myopia often develops in childhood as the eyes grow. Regular comprehensive eye exams are essential to monitor your child’s vision, detect early signs of myopia, and identify other refractive errors.

We also offer a number of control methods, such as MiSight lenses and atropine drops, to slow progression.

High Myopia and Eye Health

High myopia, usually defined as a prescription of -6.00 diopters or more, carries a higher risk of serious eye conditions later in life. These can include retinal detachment, glaucoma, and cataracts. Early detection and regular monitoring are essential to protect your child’s long-term vision and overall eye health.

Our team works with you to identify high myopia early and develop a personalized plan to slow its progression and reduce the risk of complications.

The Link Between Vision and Learning

Clear vision is essential for your child’s learning and development. Children rely on their eyes for reading, classroom activities, sports, and social interaction. Even mild undetected vision problems can impact focus, comprehension, and academic performance.

By monitoring your child’s vision and managing myopia, we help them see clearly, feel confident, and perform their best in school and everyday life.

Our Myopia Management Solutions

Controlling your child’s myopia is essential to the health and future of their vision. If myopia is left untreated, it can lead to further sight-threatening issues such as glaucoma, cataracts, or retinal detachment.

After assessing your child’s unique eyes and understanding their individual needs and lifestyle, our doctors will develop a customized myopia control plan. Myopia management methods can include specialty contact lenses and eye drops.

MiSight 1 day lenses by CooperVision are single-use contact lenses that provide the wearer with clear vision while simultaneously slowing the elongation of the eye. They work by using 2 zones, a treatment zone that creates myopic defocus and a correction zone that corrects the refractive error.

These contact lenses can be worn throughout the day by children as young as 8 years of age.

Corneal refractive therapy (CRT) is an overnight, noninvasive myopia control solution. It involves wearing rigid gas-permeable contact lenses that are designed to gently reshape the cornea while you sleep.

The reshaping of the cornea will provide you and your child with temporary clear vision during the day, eliminating the need for glasses or other corrective lenses.

Low-dose atropine eye drops have been shown to be an effective solution for myopia progression by relaxing the eye’s focusing mechanisms. The dosage prescribed will depend on your child’s unique needs.

Atropine eye drops are usually administered at bedtime.
